In honor of Mother's Day, I thought to blog about mom's cooking. What do you cook that mom made? What do you remember the most about mom's cooking?
We went out for Japanese for Aparna's birthday and ordered a tempura appetizer. I remember what a treat it was when mom would make tempura, shrimp in particular. I still remember frying outside on a hot summer day. Burning my mouth on a tempura mushroom. But it was the shrimp that I remember being such a treat. To this day, I can't make a light tempura batter.
I eat less hamburger these days so of the recipes have changed but they still remind me of my childhood. I still occasionally make pasties; beef stew; fried rice; hamburger, rice and cream of mushroom soup and macaroni with hamburger cooked in a tomato sauce covered with cheese. These things I find to be comforting and can eat until I explode. I've never tried to make these but I fondly remember swiss steak and stuffed peppers. I also remember eating though not liking stir frys. I still don't care for bean sprouts or Chinese peas. It's funny, I don't really like peas in general but there are somethings that peas belong in like stew and fried rice. I just caulk it up to that's the way things should be.
